Sunday Special August 2nd 2015: Relocation from Mildenhall to Germany

15 Jul 2015 12:45 - 02 Aug 2015 18:10 #24807 by J Maverick 16
Relocation from RAF Mildenhall to Ramstein AB and Spangdahlem AB

This event follows the RAF Mildenhall Air Fête 2K15.

This flightnight won't be so much long, we will simply start from RAF Mildenhall on rwy 11 (someone from Lakenheath on rwy 06) and we'll go to northern Germany (max alt 24,000ft, max speed about 350kts), relocating aircrafts due to the closure of the USAF base in England to Ramstein AB (ETAR) and Spangdahlem AB (ETAD), flying over former Rhein-Main AB (EDAF) now Frankfurt Am Main airport (EDDF) at 1,200 ft AGL (already advised jomo, the ATC guy that provides services there, to not neglect us or something like that if he is on service that day).
Thanks to IHAM-COL, we've also got former Bitburg AB's layout ready in the same ETAD custom pack. LINK UPDATED!

We'll use real weather and late afternoon time.

Aircraft available for this trip and where they'll land:
- KC-137R/-RT (ETAR)
- C-17 (ETAD/ETAR)
- From EGUL: F-16CJ in Spang and Ramstein livs (ETAD/ETAR) (escorts)
- 707 in USAF liv (ETAR)

These are in case there're more people than expected:
- EC-137D USAF liv (ETAR) (escort)
- From EGUL: F-15C (ETAD) (escorts)

Ehm, I don't think so. It's just a relocation so we have to use aircrafts from Mildenhall and the others are escorting these ones. Maybe I can add V-22s (but this gonna take a while...) and 707s.

Ok, yesterday's event teaches us something: FG's C-130 isn't fast enough.
So, let's use ours C-17 instead of it. And let's hope that the tanker will work.
I'll modify the whole aircraft list later on.

First post updated ready. No buildings at Ramstein, only 2 at Spangdahlem, didn't had enough time for submit them but it's not a big problem.
Remember to download also the 707 from the FG hangar and its livery simulating the RC-135.
I'll use the KC-137R, instead of the -RT, maybe it'll work better and don't crash. ;)

I might be able to make this as I'll be working away from home, provided that:

- I can get an internet connection in a suitable location (I'll be working offshore on a North Sea platform).
- My laptop can handle it (Flightgear does make it a bit hot, so I've not tried it for long periods)
- I'm not called back to work more hours.
- It's not "non-pub quiz night" or other social.

Either way, it'll be fun to have someone along who's flying from an oil rig! (if it works out).

Cheers, Scott

PS: the title says Sunday - why? the 2nd is a Saturday

I'll give you a clue or 2.

Its set in August, not September and it WAS in 2015. Were now in 2017.

I don't think it's pencilled in, so looks like the 2nd is free. Guess the obvious choice is to do something with choppers and rigs...

Was hoping 60's jets! (I'm useless with choppers!)

How about Lightnings and Phantoms intercepting Russian Bears over the North Sea rigs? Quite a real, and relevant scenario!

Is there an FGFS Bear?

There is, but it isn't great in the air. However, I've been thinking a lot about cold war intercept flight nights and I think there's a way to do it. If you're up for it, I'm sure we can placemark it in the Saturday Night Flying subforum...

There is also a version of the Bison that can be made to fly quite well if you modify it with a yaw-damper. Not to be confused with the Buffalo. The main difference is that you can't wash your hands in a Buffalo.

IIRC - Gary did a Bear escort / intercept scenario last year.

However, there are other plots that can be followed....

My stupid fault.... rushing as usual....

However, if there is a chance of this scenario being set up for Sat 02-Sept-2017, then I'll certainly try it!

Perhaps this thread should be abandoned now in preference for a new thread in the correct location.

Cheers, Scott

If it's about intercepting Bears then I'm in for sure, it's my spare time hoppy in FG :woohoo: .
Anyway I'd suggest you guys to use Herby's Tu-95 instead which is way way way way better: github.com/HerbyW/Tu-95MR ;)

As it currently stands, I can't make all of the flight on the 2nd, which is a bugger as those Lightnings (and maybe even the Phantoms, if using a lot of reheat) will need a drink over the North Sea and it would be the perfect outing for the Victor K2. So I'm going to try and get on a later shift at work and see what happens.

If I can make it for the whole flight, I could run the Victor and the Bear, and will also be streaming to Twitch as usual.

If this is a goer, lets start a new thread and secure the date...
