I tried the 16384x8192 tiles. Not good. FG hangs in a few minutes
with them while trying to load a new tile.

Considdering this has went from nothing to a functioning feature in 3 months, I think its doing not to bad so far. Yes it needs refinement yet, and a simple set of tools to work with.

It is a fantastic feature for sure. Just reporting my findings. So next I’m going to try a smaller size.

The black-grass thing isn't limited to southern-europe region. This is EGCB (Barton) in NW England. The grass runways work for me - but not the grass keep areas.

@Warty.
On earlier FG version I only ever seen the black grass when I had compositor active ( also some other missing terrain textures ) but in the 2020.4 version im on at the moment, thats not happening now.

@Timi, oh yes please !

@Stuart, I didn't think Compositor was even available yet on MacOS. I haven't found a menu option for it. ludomotico said, on the .org the other day, that " I noticed the compositor seems to be activated by default in the last nightly: buildings have shadows." Maybe these are connected?

Yes, on anything above the latest public version, Compositor is the default rendering.

I have been using a PHP script running on my internal server to get ortho tiles. Maybe it could be of use

Just need to give it the lat/lon for a scenery folder and it gives links to the images and tell you what name to give them. Only 4x*2k and the moment in mid latitudes but could easily be adapted.

Nice. Although the photo textures hide a lot of the lack of detail
in the 3D mesh. At places the resolution of the 3D mesh is just
too low.

For example Mont Blanc area was pretty horrible when I looked
at it yesterday. So I might need to roll my sleeves up at some
point again and create something more detailed.

Well, the Mesh used in FS2020 is way less detailed than what we have. Everest is visibly polished when you're up close to it in that.

Do you mean FS2020 is worse than the default scenery in FG
or worse than the custom works done?

Well, the default I guess since nobody built a custom Everest.

I went back and checked some of my X-Plane videos
from Innsbruck for example and figured FG already
looks better than X-Plane with orthophotos. Colours,
atmosphere and everything.

Well, perhaps not the buildings though.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has good 1 arcsecond (30 m)
data for Everest though. I once did a scenery to X-Plane with it
while testing Warty's EC120.

Actually comparing that to Warty's pictures, the resolution of the FG
scenery seems to be similar.

Yes the Stock MSFS 2020 terrain mesh is very low detailed.

The Issue with I have with the XP Buildings is they all look very Germanic in origin. They look way out of place anywhere except central europe.
