FlightNight August 8th 2020: Picos de Europa, Northern Spain

31 Jul 2020 13:17 - 02 Aug 2020 08:43 #47751 by Warty
Timing: Meet up at 20:00 BST (UK time). We'll be departing from La Morgal [ --airport=LEMR ] for Santander [ --airport=LEXJ ]. There is only about a 500 ft difference between to two but it's not a gentle downhill cruise.

Lots of spots to practise difficult landings / rescue missions en-route with break time scheduled around the heli adventure playground.

Route: There is a Route Manager /FlightPlan file in the download ( picos.xml ).

There are also some extra scenery objects for [ w010n40 ] for Your_Own_FG_Custom_Scenery/Objects/ folder. It is possible to do this without this custom scenery but you will then be more of an observer than a participant. If you don't add this custom scenery before the FlightNight then you could be disappointed, lost, confused or maybe even all three :blush:

Sim Conditions: We will be using Core High Pressure Region weather (because it's best not to attempt this if the weather is dodgy) and a start time of 1600 UTC (1800 local Spanish time):
--start-date-gmt=2020:08:08:16:00:00

Comms will be on TeamSpeak ONLY.

Aircraft: a HELICOPTER from the FGUK hangar - which seems to have a choice of :
AH-1, AH-64_Apache, AS350, Bell_UH-1H, bell205, Bell-206, bell407, Bell_412, bell430, bk117-b2, ch47, ch53e, ec130, ec145, Gazelle, hughes500, OH-58D, rah-66, Sikorsky-76C, Tigre, UH-60, westland-scout, Westland_Lynx-HMA8, westland_merlin_hm1, Westland_SeaKing, WG13_Lynx and wildcat.
You should chose one that can maintain a cruise speed of at least 100kt, at altitude.

Download flightplan and custom scenery: drive.google.com/drive/folders/19M_TlsiD...mmYQ91s8?usp=sharing

Emergency procedures: Crashing is to be avoided as there is not really another airport where you could spawn between start and finish. You will have to use one of these command lines:

# LZ1
--lat=43.215924 --lon=-4.9822206 --altitude=4240 --heading=140

# MASH
--lat=43.1590 --lon=-4.9142 --altitude=2945 --heading=103

# BRK
--lat=43.15226 --lon=-4.868506 --altitude=7563 --heading=290

LZ2
--lat=43.20307 --lon=-4.878305 --altitude=5687 --heading=350

LZ3
--lat=42.9447 --lon=-4.797926 --altitude=7856 --heading=130

APT1
--lat=42.88716 --lon=-4.53081 --altitude=3820 --heading=040

EBRO
--lat=43.0173 --lon=-4.1898 --altitude=-2930 --heading=100

Seaking should be good. It cant maintain 100kts while climbing though. So many choices.

If you use the custom Spain scenery pack, you can add Wartys scenery too it quite easily.
Open your "Spain" scenerry folder, add a new sub folder called "Terrain" so it is on the same level as the other folders ( Airports, Buildings etc ). Copy Wartys scenery folder, w010n40, in to the new Terrain folder.
Job done.

Seaking cant do this one. Tested it, and its ok to about 7500ft, but it cant climb to that at 100kts. I was wanting to give it an outing, but never mind. Plenty of others to pick from.

As long as it can maintain 100 kts @ 7,500 ft it should be ok. Plenty of scheduled stops to play catch-up

- and lots of corners that can be cut.

I'm not going to ruin Warty's hard work by turning up for this one (crashing very likely).
Soooo, I shall observe from a ride, as a passenger OR just watch it on uTube.

Just in case though Stu, where is the Spain custom scenery please ? (thanks for the simple instructions).

This is looking spectacular !!

Thanks Warty !

custom spain is here:-
drive.google.com/file/d/1rHXs1H1dnc2keip...rZh/view?usp=sharing

then you would need to add Wartys scenery into it.

The assumption of crashing is factored in - that's why there are the recovery command lines. You can't ruin anything by trying - the scenery is tough enough to withstand anything you could ever do to it. Give it a whirl :woohoo: :evil:

Nope.

PS The reason being is that it's supposed to be 32-36 degrees C down here later, so I may be in the Spa or lazing in the garden....with beer :woohoo: :evil:

Any recommendations as to a ride - I'm looking for one able to use an auto-pilot primarily, easy to fly would be good too.
Just in case I can join in.

Thoughts.

Re. Bell205 not working in Qt Launcher

A stray end comment is causing the problem.

Change:

bell205-set.xml Line: 107

<startup>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/bell205/thumbnail.jpg</splash-texture>
</startup> -->

to

<startup>
<splash-texture>Aircraft/bell205/thumbnail.jpg</splash-texture>
</startup>

Ah, that explains the problem some peeople are having. Another way of doing this is to create helipads that you can spawn at - probably from any launcher because they will have their own ICAO code. To do this you need to have (or create) inside your own custom scenery directory/folder:
a directory/folder called NavData
and inside that need to have (or create) a directory/folder called apt

Once you have this apt directory/folder you can add new helipads, like this:

The format of a basic helipad is really simple:
A

If you save this as WH01.dat (whiskey, hotel, zero, one) for example, you should be able to go straight to it

If anyone wants to do anything fancier with a helipad (maybe even make an airfield) it should probably be done to this older spec

developer.x-plane.com/wp-content/uploads.../XP-APT1000-Spec.pdf

This is the version that FlightGear uses
