More on extraneous projects....the dusty cobwebby ones...

(EG32) East Fortune (Drem) 1942

I'd like to figure out how to do scenery stuff well enough to pull off a 1942 version of this wee aerodrome down the coast from Edinburgh. I'm in the research phase, and have accumulated enough old aerial photos of the right era to figure out what buildings and other stuff go where.

Here's my composite, inclusive of some of the better aerials.

What is in FG, right now? Looks like this...

What was Drem?

It was a garrison station for RAF Fighter Command for the coastal defense of Edinburgh and east ports and shipping, housing 602 Sqn (flying Spitfire Vb from Aug '41 to Sept '43). Units in 603 Sqn (City of Edinburgh Sqn) operating out of Edinburgh Airport (then RAF Turnhouse) would use Drem. RAAF unit 453 Sqn was bedded down here.

Another of the deep side projects (yes, I'm still plodding on the HH-60)

This one has me learning (incredibly slowly) 3D modeling. I hate it because its difficult for my feeble brain. But since there's no traction for assistance on this, its a DIY project.

Goal: Make the Queensferry Crossing Bridge for FG and get it stuffed into the regular scenery.

Updates on this later.

I can model a cube, cone or sphere, not much good at a bridge, lol.

Good project though

Back on the Aircrane kick, some more modeling.....

Trying to make this (actually a long dead thread on this from way back in the FGUK past...):

Here's the current version. BTW I still don't know how to make it a color yet.

I might be able to make an airplane, albeit Lego, in a wee bit! <maniacal laughter ensues....)

problem with Sketchup is it makes the colours part of the model, not a texture

For the past week I've been working my way through a blender Tutorial series:

Very good at showing some features of blender I didn't know about but I still regularly get to the point where I just fudge it up beyond comprehension and want to throw the mouse through the wall

Hoping (but may be wrong) that I can correct that on the AC3D side once it's converted to an .ac

Blender melts my brain. There's just an overwhelming array of stuff and controls to learn just to get started. Sketchup is basic enough to bang shapes together and be relatively understandable (for me, at least).

My 3D efforts won't likely be a major strength for me, but if I can get something useable out of it it's worth it. Ironically, the REASON I've delved into this was to get a better idea of how to generate a texture map from an .ac file - something I still have no idea about as yet. Oh well (channelling Peter Green)...

Yes AC3D will let you sort the colours out. It's also very good at editing texture maps but if you want to produce one from a model I think Blender will be the only way you'll get one from an .ac file.

quite happy to be wrong but I haven't found a way that works yet (and that includes in Blender!)

I have learned bits & pieces of different tools (which is probably why I suck)

Initially I learned Wings3D, as there is a nice tutorial here:

en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wings_3D/Tutorials...ling_the_Junkers_F13

It's interface is a bit different, but tbh they're *all* different.

Wings3D is awful at UVmapping/texturing so I learned AC3D to edit/modify texture mapping, and more recently I've learned other things.

Blender is so damned powerful - it's the Emacs of the 3d modelling world (and I'm a Vi user...), but I can't work out how to do stuff on my own, so I mainly use it for co-ordinate rotation & format conversions.
