FlightNight 2nd Jan 2021: Canadian Rockies

The route is from Revelstoke (CYRV) to Banff (CYBA) following the Trans-Can (Trans-Canada Highway) with a half-time stop at Golden (CYGE). The road is fairly easy to spot - even through dense trees. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) also runs this way but is a bit harder to see in FG, being black 'n' all. This is especially so when it goes into a tunnel.



We will be running at about 100 knots. So it should work for large amount of FGUK hangar helicopters and propeller aircraft.

Revelstoke (CYRV) has an asphalt runway of 4,800 ft
Magnetic variation here is 15.7° East
Runway "12" has a heading of 121°M (136°T)

Golden (CYGE) has an asphalt runway of 4,500 ft
Magnetic variation here is 15.1° East
Runway "14" has a heading of 146°M (161°T)

Banff (CYBA) is a dirt/grass strip 2,800 feet long
Magnetic variation here is 14.8° East
Runway "18" has a heading of 187°M (202°T)

So you've been there. I know the place as the home of the
Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival. I went to the first one
arranged in Finland.

Well there's no way I can compete with those mountain images. This was me in The Rockies, way back when. Equipped with ready-mixed vodka and orange - the breakfast of champions

Banff airport may not appear to be well modelled in FlightGear but the real thing is not much more detailed

Correction on the "Beavers can't climb trees" story. It was just inside Alberta (not Montana).

"The single engine airplane failed to climb following a downhill takeoff that was completed with a tailwind. It bounced several times then struck trees, stalled and came to rest in a marsh. Two occupants were injured while three others were unhurt."
