With all the Lightning activity, it only seemed right that I had a look for the home of Lightnings toward the end of their active life, ex-RAF Binbrook.
I suppose not surprisingly, the FG scenery doesn't show the runways, as they are now dug up, and are farmland again. But the famous 5 sqn and 11 sqn hangars are still standing in the real world, but not in FG.
But how cool would it be to compliment these Lightning efforts, with a base like Binbrook...
I don't know if it's a flightgear thing or not to wind the clock back on airfields? Clearly it's not a true representation of what's there now.. but....
It would indeed be cool. I don't know where the FlightGear project stands on airfields that no longer exist though.
One idea that has been discussed before, and that I really like, is that you could have old versions of airfields visible only if you deliberately wind back the FG clock to a historical point in time. I think that would be awesome, but it still presents some problems, the biggest of which is that I think it only works with models - you could not do it with runways and taxiways.
There is also the possibility of paving an airfield entirely using models - solid runways, aprons and taxiways - which I've played a little bit with. Obviously the models are huge, and I wonder what the effect on performance would be, but that could be done with a scenario.

Well, there is nothing to stop doing what the FSX guys have done and made it an optional add on - just like EGOD is an optional add on with our custom buildings and so on. It wouldn't be on Terrasync, but if you added it into your scenery directory list, it'd work just fine. You could then also have multiple eras.
The problem is, drawing an airfield (runways and hard surfaces) is quite a specialist job and I don't think many of us have had much success doing it in the past...
